Transgender Male Sues for Accusations of Dress Code Violation
Tristan Broussard accepted a job at Tower
Loan which led to his move across the
country. Just a week after starting in his
position, he found himself in the vice
president’s office discussing his wardrobe
being out of line with the company’s dress
code. Discrimination of the transgendered is
now an issue at the forefront of employment
law for New Yorkers. Leading New York City
employee discrimination attorneys expect
millions of dollars in damages to be paid
out to transgendered workplace
discrimination victims like Broussard in the
next several years.
Broussard informed Tower Loan of his
lifestyle from the start and was assured
that it would not be an issue, although, it
would have been illegal for the employer to
make it an issue anyhow. Just a week later,
he was being told that he would need to
abide by the female dress code if he wanted
to work there. Broussard chose to leave his
employment at Tower Loan instead of dressing
like a woman each day he came to work.
Employee dress codes based on gender has
been a hot-button issue previously in the
New York legal system. Although it is still
not illegal to have sex-based dress codes in
the workplace, within reason, it still
creates the possibility for litigation in
situations like these. New York City has one
of the highest populations of transgender
individuals in the country.
Every employee deserves the right to earn a
living without being discriminated against.
